Shadow Fox and his box. One of the nicer zoids boxes.
Manufacturer: TOMY
Released in 2001
Motor or posable? Motor
Side profile of the Fox in all his ninja glory
Anime: Shadow Fox was introduced later in the series New Century Zero. He became Brad’s zoid after his Command Wolf AC was destroyed by it. The Fox was then shown in subsequent episodes until the end of the series. It also appeared in Genesis in a gold, yellow, and tan variation. For whatever reason a model was never released of this variation.
Why I Bought This Kit? It’s the only fox zoid ever created, making it a unique piece. I’ve also always wanted him. Even when zoids was making its run in America this zoid was hard to find, it was a Toys r’ us exclusive, and because of its popularity it was even harder to track down if you didn’t use the internet to obtain it.
Front view, do you guys want another back view?
Pros
~The models itself, I could rant about how cool it is all day, but it’s a ninja zoid, it gets tons of points for that.
~Cleanliness- the model itself is very detailed and clean looking, it’s not bulky or too sparse looking.
~Cuteness- It’s got big ears, feet, and tail when compared to the body, it’s kind of cute.
~Head- Though the neck slightly limits the up and down motion, I was expecting a more Command Wolf type jointed head, it moves side to side.
~Weapon- as shown on the box you can change the gun that is on its back. Suggestions include but are not limited to: Genosaurer Gun, Lightning Saix gun, Spinosnapper saw blades, AC unit, one I can’t identify, and part of the Wild Weasel unit.
~Wind-up Key- the key is very cleverly hidden inside the tail. The key is actually the net missile that is stored in the tail in the anime.
~More but I won’t bore you with specifics.
Bad picture of the tail gun/ wind-up key. You can make it out though so I'll include it.
Cons, though it was well crafted it’s not without its flaws
~Gold Color- a separate sprue made of gold plastic should have been used for the gold parts. Instead the gold was merely painted onto the bluish gray pieces. Unfortunately when you take the gold pieces off the sprue a little of the under color shows. It’s not very visible but annoying none the less.
~The fit of pieces- they all went together without having to be shaved down, but a lot of the pieces were very snug and sometimes proved difficult to put together. It’s better that there snug and tight fitting right?
The biggest issue with this was the gold ankle pieces, which were VERY snug, I was afraid of cracking them or scratching the paint off when I put them on.
~The cockpit/eyes- as on some zoids of its era, *thinks of Blade Liger* the cockpit doesn’t close all the way. It’s not nearly as bad as BL but still. The eyes because they actually fit into the head, not attached to the top of the head. This causes Fox to have a strip of orange at the back of his mouth. Oh, and did I mention he has buck teeth? XP
Size comparison picture to the LZ
Overall, I give the kit a 9.5/10. Though it has its flaws, they are heavily outweighed by the good aspects of the kit. I can’t wait for the HMM of the kit, if they ever make one.
Brad's zoids from the series. I know the AC is messed up, he's going to become a custom soon.
Should you buy it?
If the opportunity presents itself go for it! The kit is becoming rare these days and can usually only be found built. If you don’t mind that, and the price is reasonable get him. Though I would like to state that I don’t think he’s worth the outrageous price tag he has now. I am also very conservative with my money so what seems like a good deal for you, may not be for me. Maybe he’ll see a re-make with the whole Rebirth Century going on? Now I only need another Gun Sniper and my Blitz team is complete…
Liger Zero, Shadow Fox, and Gun Sniper Aeryn
I haven't stickered the Fox yet because I kind of like the clean model but then again I really want to put the stickers on him every time I look at the sheet. What do you guys think? Nekkid or Stickers?
