Mandatory Resident Evacuation for her area begins at 8:00am Friday morning. This is what worries me the most though: Pet owners should make plans to evacuate with their pets, as the X County Animal Shelter is unable to accommodate the drop-off of pets by evacuees. Additional information about pet care during storms is available at ---- I hope she's able to find somewhere to stay with her animals with her.

D: Hopefully she has relatives farther inland that she can evacuate to. I know she won't leave without her snakes.

The annoying thing is, most of my relatives are ophidiophobic bastards. To have a chance, I'd have to go to the other end of the state. Anna hasn't threatened snakes nearly as bad as Christine, and has volunteered. I was just hoping Irene wouldn't be a bitch. -_- I really really really want to stay but mom is being a girl thingy P U S S Y and if she's going, I have no choice.
Part of me wants to stay because if this is a "suicide wish" like mom overexagerates, then I won't have to deal with any more bullshit that Life has taken much pleasure in dishing to me. *flips life off* -_-

I asked the guy on the other forum if there was any info he could pass on to you: All she can do is go inland and seek shelter. Normally local schools offer shelter. If she has a car drive out of the area. The storm will pass and one can only hope their home is intact. Personally I would drive until I found a hotel. Keep the cats and snakes in the car. They will be fine. At any rate, we have staged 28 trailers of relief supplies and generators at Fort Bragg NC. Other transportation outfits have spotted other trailers as well. The supplies are in place. She needs to evacuate if she is in the area local goverment place mandatory evacuation. Wait out the storm. Currently I'm moving 56 trailers to Chicapee MA. I will move more tomorrow. Like your friend...we then wait out the storm. Rescue begins. I brought two IMAT vehicles from California. The are for two search and rescue teams. The teams are normally 30 people and 6 or so dogs. Simply put, we are getting prepared for the worst. I'm off tonight but the weekend I will be up 48 hours. Until then she should move inland if the authorities ordered so. Hope it's of some help Wish I could be there to help you, I'd take your pets in no problem. Keep in touch...and please don't stay where you are, you're too close to the coastline and the current tracks have the eye passing near you which is where the strongest winds will be. She has downgraded to a Cat 2 for the moment but she will strengthen again and hit your area with winds of 120+ mph, which will bring with it damaging storm surges. If I know your location which I won't divulge here, you are in an area which could be damaged by storm surges and flooding, plus you would be completely isolated. Don't risk it, even if you have to camp in the car with the snakes and cats, just get out of there, please.

Your friend would have a cow if he talked to half the people I've waited on at dollar tree. A shitton of locals are staying because of gas prices, not being able to afford said prices, the hassle of trying to figure out how to get back, etc.

It's a big gamble. I mean in terms of intensity Category three may not seem much, but Katrina was a Cat 3 when she made landfall in Louisiana, and your area is very coastal. I mean I don't know the precise topography, whether there might be high ground in your area that might be safe from the storm surges and flooding, but considering that the eye wall looks set to pass very close to you, you are looking at 100-120mph winds which are going to do some real damage to power lines, trees, mobile homes, small houses and the like. Power and water supplies will be gone for a while too, and you'll be isolated if any of the bridges give out or take damage.
I don't think it'll be another Hurricane Floyd...probably more a Fran, but where Fran made landfall to the south-west of you, Irene looks to be preparing to make landfall virtually on you. Of course, the track could change but by the time there's a solid prediction it'll be virtually on top of you. I'd go with your Mum on this one, when Mother Nature is concerned, it's best to steer clear of her at her wildest...unless your name is Reed Timmer and you have the Dominator, of course.

unless your name is Reed Timmer and you have the Dominator, of course. Or Jim Cantore. One of our hotels signs read: "Jim Cantore's here, better start running" XD

I was watching the weather on TV at work during lunch and they were talking about the Hurricane. Suddenly one of my co-workers pipes up "We don't want to know what's going on in America, what about here?" And I'm like "I do, one of my best friends lives out there!" Part of me wants to stay because if this is a "suicide wish" like mom overexagerates, then I won't have to deal with any more bullshit that Life has taken much pleasure in dishing to me. *flips life off* -_- But that would make Ghostie very sad

Looks like she might be weakening now rather than strengthening as was first thought. She's currently a Cat 2 and forecasts at this moment have her coming ashore as a Cat 1 which is much better than the Cat 3 that was originally forecast.
Obviously this could all change in the next few hours, so really it's still best to get out of dodge until she passes, just in case.

Two years, eleven months and fifteen days since the last hurricane made landfall in the US (Ike), Hurricane Irene has made landfall near Cape Lookout, NC as a Category One Hurricane.
Stay safe guys. It may only be a Cat One, but that's still enough to kill if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time.

And ironically Irene's being nicer than that tropical storm we had last year. Raining and blowing like a demon but the power and net have been up, give or take a few minutes of downtime.
Don't kill me. I stayed. XD; My whole family decided to, because the path Irene was taking was putting our Raleigh stay in the same condition, and Boone was just too far.
The snakes are in the upstairs hall (the only part in our side of the house that has walls all around) so they won't be in the path of any broken glass, and the mammals are downstairs. The cats have been helping me sleep off a horrible cold (potential flu) I got yesterday.
Oddly, evacuating took it's toll just as bad. On Thursday, a family from my own town were evacuating, hit a pallet in the road and the mother died. Last I heard, everyone else was in the hospital, critical. And that was before Irene even sneezed at us. You wouldn't think Evacuating would be dangerous...

Good to hear you and the kids are safe, how has the sea been? Did a couple of Flight Sim 10 flights out of your local airport and it was...bumpy... ;D Ironic about that woman, another death that has been reported was a guy who had a heart attack whilst putting up plywood at his windows, long before Irene had even hit shore. At least she fizzled out on her way up, although we'll see what she does to poor ickle New York
