This is reminding me, for the last few days I have been DAHN SAAF (in the south) and the number of times I've heard someone saying to my mum "So where are from? The girls sound AWFULLY northern!"

At one point I had an argument (Rich Vs. me, my sister and his wife Dizzy) about the pronunciation of words. Anyway, later on we got onto the subject of slang, so I thought I'd roll off a few north Nottinghamshire-not-near-Cumbria-at-allisms!

Duck - it's an affectionate thing you'd say to strangers, erm, pretty hard to explain. Like in some places they'd say "hello love!" or darling or flower. Here you'd say "AYUP ME DUCK!" Usually said by market-place holders.
Has cat died?/Your cat's died! - Your trousers are short. I'm not sure where this come from. I've heard it's something to do with having your trousers at half-mast in mourning for your cat... Or something.
Sweating like a beaver! - When you're really sweaty, like its a hot day, "Oooh it's hot! I'm sweating like a beaver, I am!"
Tabs - Ears ie. "Are tabs cold?" which means, "are your ears cold?" usually said to someone who's wearing a silly hat in winter.
Nesh - Cold. "It's a bit nesh out!", it can also mean that someone's a wuss and gets cold easily, so you'd say "oooh! He's a bit nesh!"
Cob - a bread roll. About twenty miles down the road a cob is an entire loaf of bread!

There are a few more that I can't think of, or can't be bothered to explain at the moment. I have an entire list saved somewhere. Most of the others are just combining words in a sentence, liiiike... "Wot wohry doin?" means "What was he doing?" Even more confusing because the letter T does NOT exist in this part of the country :'D

I'm still getting used to modern slang in my parts. I missed when "sick" went from "gross/disgusting" to "wicked awesome".

Pronunciations is one of my finest hypocrisy moments... Nearly all pronunciations don't bug me... I used to live in the Appalachian mountains, were most people would go "It's Apple-a-chan, not Applayshyun!", I didn't care if you called it Apple-migration! (inside joke)

I don't care if Corolla (Local: Caralla) is called core-roll-a. Or Hatteras is called Hatras or whatever.

But for some reason, I get all bent out of shape when someone pronounces Bodie Island as Bow-dee. Like bow tie. I guess it's because I know the etymology of the island name. (Used to be called Bodies island for all the bodies that would wash up thanks to the shoals that wrecked ships.) I constantly wish they'd finish restoring or whatever reason they have the light-house closed so I can drag tourists in, point at the plaque that still reads "Bodies Island Light House" and say "Just because they dropped the S doesn't make the o long!"
