Japan has been hit by the largest earthquake in some 250 years. 8.9. A Tsunami has devastated the north-eastern coast and at this time forty-four people have been killed, mainly in the coastal regions. Tokyo is damaged but not devastated as many of the earthquake proof buildings withstood it, but the tsunami...well...it's bad.

Mother Nature is PMS'ing real bad >>;
Though that's gonna put a slowdown on postal services for those expecting Zoids and stuff from Japan.

Yowch! Lucky for Tokyo that they have so much earthquake proofing.

The quakes seem to be moving around the ring of fire, first chile, then new zealand , now Japan. watch out California :/

They've been waiting for another big one for a while... Back in Japan, one of their nuclear power plants reactors has a broken cooling system which means that the heat build up inside the reactor and the pressure from the steam (Since it's a Boiling Water Reactor) is reaching dangerous levels. They are venting radioactive steam from the reactor in an effort to bring the internal pressure down but at the same time, doing that will surely reduce the amount of coolant in the cycle...but it's better that and buy a few hours than for the lid of the reactor to be blown off ala Chernobyl. If that wasn't bad enough that one reactor is in trouble, three more reactors at another plant seven miles from the dangerous one have also suffered malfunctions with their cooling systems and evacuation zones are being set up. This is a very very dark day for Japan.

Gee, it'd be triple Chernobyl if they're not careful.

Poor people, I'll send them my prayers and hopes.
I am not hearing good things about the one nuclear reactor, it's the one with coolant system has failed and they can't cool it fast enough.
First the earthquake in New Zealand, another in southern China (last week), and now one in Japan. The Ring of Fire is really active this year, I'm wondering if there is more to come.

This is VERY Bad and is just terrible A large explosion has occurred at the Fukushima-Daiichi - or Fukushima I - nuclear power plant in north-eastern Japan, close to the epicentre of Friday's earthquake. Officials fear a meltdown at one of the plant's reactors. Tens of thousands of people in the surrounding area have been urged to evacuate Taken From BBC News

That reactor is in big trouble, it seems the container itself is still intact but a hydrogen build up in the reactor hall caused an explosion which has destroyed the reactor hall. They've written the reactor off now and they're trying to cool it using seawater which is going to screw the reactor up and write it off but will hopefully bring the temperature down. There have been consequences already though, three people who were evacuated from the area near the plant have been confirmed affected by radiation and caesium has been detected around the plant which...which is not good because that's from inside the reactor...so even though they say that the reactor is intact...I have a horrid hunch that that is a 'everything is ok here, do not panic' method to prevent people in Japan and surrounding nations from having a shit fit. There's a map floating around the interwebs and apparently it's been shown on Japanese tv as well that shows the potential fallout cloud going across the Pacific and hitting the US west coast should it go into meltdown. So, let's just hope and pray that they can stop a runaway reaction and get the temps down on this reactor or it's not going to be pretty.
Poor guys, they are really being boned, earthquake, tsunami and potential nuclear disaster.

Better that than let it blow completely. Exactly so, and that's their reasoning. Of course, they'll be lumbered with a busted nuclear reactor which they can't do anything with for sixty years, but better that than a new Red Forest. There's not been much news from the NPP for the past few hours which I think we can take to mean that things are coming back under control and the primary concern now is the radiation that has already been released. Evacuees from the area are being scanned for radiation as they leave, a couple have had to be decontaminated and three people (workers from the plant I think) are having treatment for exposure but hopefully the worst has passed.

Just unbelievable,
Humans really know how to screw this world up :/ sure an Earthquake happened but still , Earthquakes are a natural occurance for f's sake. Even violent ones should have been taken into account!
If any of them explode we'd all be affected. Any food sourced from certain parts of Asia could very well be forever contaminated.

While I agree that the human race is more detrimental to the world than a benefit, I fail to see how that has anything to do with what's going on in Japan. They were struck by a disaster that is impossible to predict and are doing everything they can to make sure everything is safe, even if it means destroying their own reactor which, who knows, that could create power problems in Japan which manufactures zoids if you want to think about yourself. I'm sure if they were aware such a disaster was coming, they would've shut down the reactor before hand so no damage would have been done, but earthquakes are one of the least predictable events. You can't blame them for that.
